Czech

Czech is my mother tongue and an easy subject for me.

I just had to practice grammar because it is quite hard. I wrote some essays and used my exercise books to prepare for the exams that were required by the Czech authorities for several years.

The teacher that examined me always spoke highly of my stories and essays. For example I wrote a story that was told by a wardrobe. It was a very old and very proud and haughty wardrobe and it was writing an autobiography for younger wardrobes. The wardrobe witnessed a lot of historical events and sometimes even took part in them. My teacher encouraged me to send this story to some competition but somehow I never managed that.

I also read a lot of books and poems by Czech writers - I wrote a reading diary. I also read some interesting books about the Czech language.

Another thing that interested me were proverbs and sayings and idioms. I have a big book full of these (with explanations).

Here is my characteristic of Lady Midday - a mythical character that is said to steal children and cause other misfortunes at noon. She is very famous because of a ballad by Karel Jaromír Erben. The poem is about a woman who is preparing dinner and her small child is annoying her. She threatens to call Lady Midday and in the end really calls her (though she doesn't really want her to carry away her child). Lady Midday (an old, horrible woman) really comes and the mother tries to protect her child. When the father comes home from work, he finds his wife on the floor in a faint. He is able to revive her but the child is dead (the woman had accidentaly smothered it). It's very dramatic and very well known. The author wrote many more ballads of a similiar kind - I like to read them and they are perfect for learning by heart and reciting from memory.

This is a page from a book where I write stories about my life. It's something like a diary but with pictures and more like a story.

This is one of my many Czech textbooks - it's about creative writing.

Below are a few pages from my reading diary - I sometimes draw pictures in it:
